BLACK & WHITE EBONY twin coffee tables - Watch this, if you want to learn about Black & White Ebony
Nice!
So how does this affect total cutting time? Seems like you might need to take more shallow path cuts with a wider bit.
Bravo
You also would like end mills? What type and what sizes?
I like the direction you're heading in Javier. I don't do a lot of deep pocketing cuts these days, but that bit does look like a workhorse. If I may.... If you continue to develop bits, what about "unusual" sized spiral end mills like 2mm or 4mm? I think if SO user thought about their work, they'd find those sizes tremendously useful
My friend! I am all ears. What end mill bit design would you envision? Can you send me a link? I am happy to look into it and like the idea…
@Woodensoul I envisioned a compression bit (best of both worlds I suppose). My bit collection is a hodgepodge so I don't have any specific brand in mind to mimic. Just spitballing ideas for you to ponder if you're looking to expand your operation
You are comparing a rubio application to a rubio plus 4 extra coatings? What if you just applied the rubio 4 extra times? Then compared them.
Using multiple layers of Rubio doesn’t improve its waterproofing, I have tested that here: Do additional coats of Rubio increase wood waterproofing? ua-cam.com/video/4jiEQcecvGg/v-deo.html
how about doing the tests with water, since it is the most common liquid a dining/coffe table will be exposed to.
The result is the same but the stains are harder to see pn camera
Sorry I only just saw this now. This is a great project, awesome work 🫡
Why are you sorry?
No longer available in the US for some reason. Also, as mentioned below, you are not using the Festool bit for its intended purpose which is to carve single line font characters, not outline characters. Shaper Origin now has a few single line fonts with more coming (I hope).
Yeah, it's no longer sold, but I ended up using mostly this bit anyway, as it's much cheaper and has pretty good results for the money: ua-cam.com/video/BtAmp1RZT0o/v-deo.html
Looks like a heck of a Planer.
It is, oh boy it is!
Great video my friend. When I heard about this product too, I had the same reaction. I never really saw the usefulness for my applications. It was great that you did try a 3rd party device, to validate if it would work or not. Keep the vids coming! 😁
About to travel a bit, so no vids for a while 😆
@@Woodensoulfor work, or pleasure? We just got back from a month in Portugal and Spain. 😊
@@HHWS Health... Portugal and Spain, wonderful countries!
What is the maximum width you can use? You said ideally 30cm - is that the maximum width possible while still seeing the markers?
You can go wider and rotate the SO accordingly, but you have to use the workstation without the arms
Excellent video 🤩👏👍👍👍bro thanks
Thank you, most welcome 👊🏼
same with me.. The BT Device is a BT Keyboard. IT works will my Devices. I have lots of Calipers and now should I dump them? This is illegal! This is monopoly.
It’s a real bummer, and also bad for our environment to expect people to buy something twice that they don’t need
I’m waiting for the day when you pay for firmware upgrades. That wouldn’t surprise me. The SO caliper is overpriced much like the pry bar they just released.
The pry bar 🤣🤣🤣🤣
THIS IS NOT A CERAMIC COATING ! It is a coating, indeed, but not a full on ceramic coating. I think it's important for viewers to know that this kind of product is a diluted, rather "weak" form of ceramic coat. The real deal is sold in glass containers because the solvents used in it would eat through plastics. Just wanted to rectify this.

I guess the workaround is to get a Bluetooth caliper, connect it to your computer, and use it in your design software, and/or Studio, then send the file off to your hub. Since I do all my design that way, and never really do it on the fly on the Shaper, this workflow works for me and I don’t need the Shaper Caliper.
Interesting, I only thought of the use case of measuring stuff in the workshop. The use case where I do this on the computer is non existent for me…
@@Woodensoul It's not for me in woodworking...but when I'm doing 3D printing I'm often either reproducing something, and it's nice to get the exact measurements, or I'm trying to fit something into another part. So that's my use case.
I am very new to Shaper Origin. What would be the necessity of a bluetooth caliper in the first place when design is done on a computer or onboard the Shaper itself? Just to avoid manually transferring measurements?
Yeah, that’s pretty much the only reason to use that caliper
If you are in CNC, Laser cutting work, and don't want to repeatedly increment your work by.01mm and cut.. then, yes, it's nice to have these gadgets, but you can do without them.
But withholding wood you never work with that granularity and frankly the SO isn’t that precise in the first place
The pricing of the shaper caliper isn't far off from a Mitutoyo caliper with data out. How's the quality?
The quality of the Shaper caliper? I don’t know, I am not planning to buy it
Thank you for taking the time and money to clarify this for us. In my view, actions like this (crippling Bluetooth) and especially charging $200 for Auto Pass have significantly damaged the good will Shaper had developed with customers. When I bought the Origin, it was clearly a very expensive tool with great potential and Shaper promised new capabilities and upgrades would be forthcoming and free. Both of these SW enhancements should have fit that description. I suspect that the Festool overlords insisted Shaper find a way to extract more money from their existing customers, thus the broken commitment. Very disappointing.
Most welcome, I wish it would have worked, that would have been a more uplifting video. And agree about breaking the promises…
Let me all tell you how lame SO support ar: I shipped my GEN1-I was amongst the initial backers. After upgrading to the latest firmware back in OCT2023, the screen went black. Support then decided I send it to the US. I did, $350 + $52 VAT +$25 Insurance. They fixed it. I was asking them to take it back and trade it in for the GEN2, I insisted via email, and they turned me down. Now, they come up with a trade-in program. I had to re-ship it from their Repair center $35 + Tax, $360 to my country, another VAT15% and $44 for insurance and customs. A total of more than $900. These people have no respect and no appreciation for us- the people who brought them to life and the ones who are paying for their salaries! You dont know how much frustration and pain it has caused me.
Oh your story is bad, so bad it hurts my brain. Outrageous, why would you treat customers that way???
Another great vid my friend! I love the fact that you creating great value having bits made that are of high quality for a good price. Especially bits that are highly useful. I would have ordered one fir sure, but I would have to buy the 8mm collet. I use the imperial Shaper. All my bits are 1/4 inch. Congrats my friend! 😁
Hi Henry! Wow, you never bought the 8mm collet? That’s hard to imagine for me, there are so many great bits with 8mm shanks, especially the large cleaning bits, I couldn’t ho without it… you are clearly a skillful man 😆👊🏼
Your too generous. Lol I think I’m a little more, hey it works, so why change. Admittedly I’ve had some less than great results with the 1/4. I think I’ll make the investment for the fall season. 😄
Alternatively you can buy the collet clamp only, to reduce the investment costs 🤣
I know I'm late, but I'd be interested in purchasing. I'm in CA, USA. Happy to send you some of our nice redwood and walnut woods!
Thanks for your offer man, I would love to get that wood, but I live in Europe, so way too expensive to ship :D I have not bought the Black Wood ceramics for redistribution, because my follow up tests (ua-cam.com/video/w6-ggcrAFhM/v-deo.html and the follow up video to that) showed that there is no apparent difference between wood and car ceramics, and car ceramics are much cheaper.
@@Woodensoul I wish there was an easy way to ship wood. Well if you ever want small burl pieces, we have so much here.

Have you tried the Black Forest ceramic? I'm curious if it is similar to blacktail!
I have not tried it, but I assume it will be very similar to all ceramics. I have two follow up videos where I tested car ceramics, so you might want to check out those to get an impression
@@Woodensoul Thanks! Yes I've seen our other videos. Great comparisons. It sounds like the conclusion you came to is that Blacktail is the best you've tried, and definitely better that automotive ceramic coats. Appreciate your videos.
No, in my recent tests I wasn’t able to find significant advantages of Blacktail over car ceramics. They mostly performed tge same but are much cheaper
@@Woodensoul INteresting. I saw your video where you describe the damage to the table. It would be a shame if the ceramic coat actually made the finish LESS durable, or more difficult to repair. It does seem like putting a layer of silicone on finished wood would be a bad idea, as there's only a weak chemical bond to the oil wax finish underneath. Appreciate your experiments!
@@jeffreyjbyron Yeah, let's say that there are mixed signals. I haven't stopped completely using it, but I am evaluating much more carefully if its really necessary, and what it would mean if I have to repair the object.
What tool did you use to clean up the edge?
It's a plastic brush on an angle grinder
1:33 😮 Wow, I've never seen a sander like that.
Hi. It's called a Stroke Sanding machine (ua-cam.com/video/nrI6GRZ5T3k/v-deo.htmlsi=d09fHmvzYhwQkE1d). It was already in the workshop I rent, so I totally lucked out, but if I ever need to find a new workshop, I will have to buy one, it's so useful.
Very nice initiative! I have a BT Caliper that works with iPads, notebooks, Macs, Linux, CNCs Andriod, and basically any device except - you guessed it - the Origin! It does not connect and does not work with it.. Isn't this a monopoly? I mean I can buy the most expensive car and fit it with any accessories from basically anyone- anywhere.. Why is this happening?
Oh man, I am about to publish a video about this. But in a nutshell you are right about everything you said 😩
@@Woodensoul I am really shocked - at their behavior. The BT Caliper is more or less an exact copy of their own. In fact, its a few years older, which makes their Caliper the "Copy".. So do I have to dump my hard earned, expensive tools for their sake?

Um...you didn't test with WATER...you know...the clear stuff the drops from the sky? How often will red wine sit unattended on a piece of wood for over 60 minutes? Even if it does, a quick sand and reapply fixes it.

I always watch his videos. Are you talking about the leak?
Would rainx work?
Whats that?
Javier: I love your videos. They are better than Shaper’s! I was wondering if you would do a very basic video on engraving, explaining bits, settings, and basic tips for beginners. It seems timely now that Shaper has SLFs.
I am happy to make such a video. If you can let me know what your main questions are, I can bake that in. Also, what are SLFs?
Sorry. Single Line Fonts. What are the best bits for those? What are the best bits for non-SLF engraving. Does it depend on how deep you are engraving? How deep should you engrave? Does the type of wood matter? How deep should you engrave per pass. Can you cut all the way through 20mm to engrave (is that even engraving or is it carving?). Why are engraving bits always set at .02 inches diameter in the videos? Do you need to use offsetting while engraving (I saw one person do that in UA-cam). Lots of questions that spring to my novice mind! Shaper tutorials do not cover this in basic form.
@@Wyman642 Got you. I am happy to make a new video about this, but need some time to think about it. In the meantime, you will find some helpful information in these videos: ua-cam.com/video/dyiF8kUX5Vw/v-deo.html and ua-cam.com/video/BtAmp1RZT0o/v-deo.html

@@Woodensoul You are very welcome!
I think this is a useful test, but it's pretty specific and far short for making a broad conclusion of, "Don't use ceramic coatings you would for your cars on woods.". Various automotive ceramic coatings can be wildly different from each other, just like various conventional wood coatings can be different from each other. The 'ceramic' coating from one manufacturer isn't necessarily going to behave the same as the 'ceramic' coating from some other vendor and it's not very useful to make sweeping assertions based on testing just one product. It may prove to be a true statement, but this test doesn't support it. Just say that the one product you tested, as applied, is not suitable for protecting against wine stains and leave it at that.
Yeah, this test was poorly executed. I see that you have already discovered the follow up test that was more thorough…
@@Woodensoul Yes. You did a great job in that follow-up! I hope folks all watch that one.
